Combining Australia and New Zealand

By Vivian MarshAugust 30, 20254 min read

Australia and New Zealand sit close enough to combine and far enough apart that the order you visit them decides how much of three weeks you spend in airports. The trip works best as an open-jaw, arriving in one country and departing from the other.

Distance is the constraint most people underestimate. Sydney to Auckland is three and a half hours in the air, and the domestic legs between Melbourne, Cairns and Queenstown add up faster than the map suggests once you count the transfers at each end.

Which order, and why

Direction is set by where you start, by the season, and by which country you would rather finish in. Both orders work, and the wrong one costs about three days of connection time.

  • From North America, run westward: Sydney first, then New Zealand, then home from Auckland, so the time changes work with you instead of against you.
  • From Europe, reverse it: Auckland first for a gentler arrival, Australia last before the long flight home.
  • March and April suit both countries at once: New Zealand holds its autumn color and northern Australia is still warm enough to swim.
  • Book the international legs as a single open-jaw ticket on one alliance, because that is what protects you when a connection fails.
  • Cap the internal flights at four; every extra airport costs about half a day once transfers and check-in are counted.

A one-way international ticket usually costs 10 to 20 percent more than a return, and it buys back days that no hotel upgrade can match. On a three-week trip the trade is easy to justify.

Flight math

Domestic fares move with lead time more than with distance, and the bands below assume booking two to three months ahead in 2026. School holidays and the week before Christmas add about a third to most of these numbers.

LegFlying timeFare band
Sydney to Auckland3 hours 20$180 to $320
Melbourne to Queenstown3 hours 05$200 to $350
Cairns to Sydney2 hours 40$150 to $260
Queenstown to Auckland1 hour 50$90 to $170
Sydney to Melbourne1 hour 30$90 to $180

Two rules keep the math honest. Any leg under three hours is worth flying rather than driving, and any routing that sends you through the same airport twice is worth re-pricing as an open-jaw. Baggage charges on the budget carriers apply per bag, so families pay the difference twice over.

A three-week sketch

This is the shape we build most often in shoulder season, with three nights as the minimum stay anywhere. Two nights looks cheaper and usually costs a day of the trip instead.

  1. Days 1 to 5: Sydney, arriving with the harbor on your first morning and keeping day two completely empty for jet lag.
  2. Days 6 to 9: Melbourne for the laneways and markets, with the Great Ocean Road as a full private day.
  3. Days 10 to 13: North Queensland for the reef and the Daintree, which is also the only warm swimming on a southern winter trip.
  4. Day 14: fly to Auckland for one night, then connect south the following morning.
  5. Days 15 to 19: Queenstown and Fiordland, including a Milford Sound day and one blank afternoon for weather.
  6. Days 20 to 23: Rotorua for geothermal country and a cultural evening, then depart from Auckland.

Drop Melbourne or Rotorua to make it two weeks, and never cut a night from Queenstown to add a fourth city. The trip improves with fewer bases rather than more.

What to book early

The inventory that sells out is not usually the flights, and that surprises first-time planners. It is the small lodges and the fixed-capacity boats that go first.

  • International flights: six to nine months ahead for premium cabin space, three to four months for economy at the sensible fares.
  • New Zealand lodges and South Island stays: six to nine months for December and January, when the supply is genuinely small.
  • Milford Sound coach and boat combinations: four to six weeks, and earlier across the December school holidays.
  • Outer Great Barrier reef boats: four to eight weeks, since the smaller vessels carry twenty to thirty guests.
  • Department of Conservation huts and alpine lodges in Fiordland: these run ballots and fixed release dates in peak weeks.

Car rentals are the one item that stays flexible: book six weeks out for a good rate and change it freely if the plan shifts. Collect the car on the day you leave the city rather than at the airport on arrival.

How we put it together

We price the open-jaw international routing first, because it sets the dates everything else hangs on, then lock the internal flights while the fare bands are still low. The lodging follows in order of scarcity: South Island rooms first, city hotels last, since cities always have a second option. We hold internal flights for 48 hours at no cost while you compare the routing, and the whole exchange usually fits in one email thread.

Tell us your dates, your starting airport and how many flights you are willing to take, and we will send the trip with two routing options and the total flight time for each. That comparison usually decides the plan in a single exchange.
